Aug.. 13, 14 and 15 is O-BON in Japan. It is a festival for the dead, with family reuniouns and visits to graves and BON dancing around taiko drums and traditional music…

Local Nagasaki people stay out of the ocean (and even pools) because the gates to and from hell are open (for the visiting spirits) in the water…so even though today will be hot and sunny and EVERYONE is on vacation…the beaches won’t be very crowded…

I find it so interesting that geographically ,we are so close, speak a very similar dialect to the Nagasaki-ben(more so than Kumamoto-ben in fact) and alot of the Nagasaki traditions are honoured here(peron,Ja-odori etc) but this “No swimming during Obon”tradition is un-heard of and DH is fascinated!

If you want a swim, why don’t you and the kids pop over to Amakusa?!But the beaches will be crowded…

yah, in fact, this year for the first time, in honor of OBON… there is no POOL time after obon… usually, in september.. the kids finish up their swimming lessons at school, but this year they crammed them all in before summer break… “because of o-bon”..

so, not only an old “wives tale” but a current one…
