this is the banner I made a few years ago to hang from the c.d. shelf in my entryway.  It’s not meant to be washable so I used foam and plastic pre-cut decorations and also cut and sewed on some felt shapes that I probably took from some coloring books.

I used a few halloween prints given to me…..it was all great fun to make!!!!!

here is another shot with more of the space surrounding it.

tidied up for your viewing pleasure…

Be glad of life

because it gives

you the chance

to love and to work

and to play and to

look up at the stars.

—Henry VanDyke—

In the grocery store I buy beets.

my lover is coming to dinner tonight

and she has asked me for borscht.

I choose the largest bunch: 89 cents

There is no sour cream.

The aproned man tells me

“tomorrow morning.”  But my lover

is coming tonight.

Leaving, I see headlines;

“U.S. invades Grenada”

Fear coils within my ribs

and anger— that just as my life blooms

into sweetness, these idiots

up the ante.

I feel foolish as I drive to another store.

What does it matter if our borscht has sour cream or doesn’t?

But I buy the sour cream.

I scrub beets, chop

and put them to boil,

their rich red infusing the water.

This too is courage:

to cook, to eat

to seize our daily lives.

I took this page from a calendar the year before I came to Japan, so about 1986….I get strength when I read it…. it’s so simple and so hopeful.  It’s timeless……even today with California burning and the earth in peril and war raging in the middle east….we continue to live our lives.

last night I was frying up something for dinner and my 6 year old came in to get me….. he said “mom!!!!  come and look, the moon has just come up and it’s nearly full and it looks great…. you can see it clearly right now….come and see!”   I told him I couldn’t stop frying but as soon as I was done we could go together…… so we did…. I took his hand and we walked down the street… a six year old doesn’t just walk..every step is a skip or a hop or a jump or a kick… and we stood on the curve where we could see the moon in all her glory…. coming up over the hills…. it was great!!!!!!

I get comfort from the moon.  I know that while I look up at the moon with my son, the very same moon is shining down on the rest of my family . That very same moon is shining all over the world….shining joy and comfort and hopefully peace……

This too is courage.

Moon when salmon return to earth.

    Welcome,friend swimmer,we have met again

in good health.

Welcome, Supernatural One, you, Long-Life-Maker,

for you come to set me right again

as is always done by you.

–from a kwakiutl prayer said when a jumping salmon is seen.  translated from the kwkiutl

the lunar cycle known as the Moon When Salmon Return to Earth in the traditional  calendar of the Saanich people comes in early autumn, when there is a chill in the air……….. from the book FULL MOON FEAST by Jessica Prentice

It seems to be a month we can celebrate fish!!!!  From huge halibut to the small spiny sea urchin to colorful fabric fish hanging from a stick…….

I have been cranking out the fish to send to a friend…. some for her and some to sell…… we shall see……..I like the way they all look together.  Then, I separated them into little groups to hang.

more on the seafood topic.

first of all, I must say, that is a very impressive fishing photo.  Excellent catch and fabulous photo.  My kids would like to know a few more details on the catching of this fine fish…… do share.

moving on…. an urchin report….

a day at the beach and some fresh seafood.  My fine young son has finally grown into the mask and snorkel and fins and is very comfortable in the water.  He spent the afternoon “bringing home the bacon” providing SUSHI for his dad.  The two young ones were happy in the tide pools with occasional dips in the ocean in goggles viewing the fish.  I took a long relaxing snorkel and saw dozens of varieties of fish….. it was a great way to recharge my soul batteries and very relaxing.

Halibut photos?

Here are the results from our halibut trip to Homer over Labor Day. This is my attempt to upload a photo, so we’ll see. J.D. caught the 99 pounder.

Labor Day 2007

bringing in the sheaves……..

ah yes, it’s finally fall here and the days are refreshingly cool…..unless you are out working the fields.  The rice fields planted in april by the school kids has come to fruit and on friday we harvested!!!!!!!  I am on the volunteer team that sees the project through from beginning (sorting last years rice for plantable seed, seeding, planting, harvesting and finally making mochi and eating it)  to end….I love it.  It’s great education and experience for the kids and lots of interaction with  parents (fulfilling their mandatory volunteer duty)…..

photo one, the field when we arrived in the morning….. fresh with dew….guarded by scarecrows…and possibly swarming with poisonous snakes…….we did snake patrol….(combing through each row) and found nothing…

we worked from 8 till noon and got it mostly done…… but there was cleanup work after that……….it was  bumper crop this year…the kids did a great job. and I was all tarred out.

shout out HELLO to my brother and his girls!!!!!!!!!!
