while I sit and type and wait for the blogging muse to work her magic, my fine young son just zoomed by the front of the house on his scooter.  fast. with a helmet on. and another grey hair just popped out of my scalp.

As usual, the news on t.v. doesn’t offer much hope.  This week in Japan a mother strangled her 6 year old and left him sitting peacefully in a park.  A five year old girl was found unclothed on the road, the victim of foul play while she walked alone  to a friend’s house. Tons of imported tainted rice has invaded Japan, and contaminated milk has killed 4 in China and sickened tens of thousands.  Products from this contamination are being removed from store shelves in Japan. There doesn’t seem to be much hope.  There is, though.  Despite the doom and gloom (not to mention the financial crisis) my fine young son continues on his circuit around the block, on a bicycle now, riding much too fast, huge toothless grin (he lost his front tooth a few days ago) blissfully unaware of all the tragedy that someday will turn his hair grey, worried now only about keeping pace with his friend.

CHOOSE LIFE

only that and always,

and at whatever risk…

To let life leak out,

to let it wear away

by the mere passage of time,

to withhold giving it

and spending it

is to choose nothing.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!!!

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!!!

when harry met sally.

so, it’s on cable this month. I love that movie, although, it’s not really appropriate for my kids to watch.  in the very beginning there are several old couples being interviewed and one old guy says… I bumped in to her after (20 or 30) several years and she still looked just the same….

two years ago I attended my 25 year  high school reunion.. and you know… the females in the class looked FABULOUS…!!!! (the guys, not so much)…. and this year, while I was back in the states…I ran in to a few women, and ya know??? they hadn’t changed a bit!!!!! they looked great…!!! (I myself, look …well…older….)

so, maybe love is blind… and if I run into that guy that I kind of had a crush on …ya know, back in the day…… and he looks old and old…. (like me) then maybe …who knows….not that I am looking, or anything….could be like when harry met sally!!!!!

went to a bazaar today and bought a bunch of FUROSHIKI…. cloth wraps for carrying things.  I am such a material girl, I buy anything made of cotton!!!!

wow!!! what a great looking group!!!

yah, I thought the typhoon *number 13* was headed to china but it looks like a direct hit, next week, like the 17th or the 18th.  WIll provide minute by minute updates later.  Hope everyone in Texas is ok.

wow. lots of news in the world!!!!

lots to keep the folks at CNN busy!!!  Looks like trouble in Texas with Ike.  Yesterday a huge earthquake in Northern Japan followed 12 minutes after a huge earthquake in Indonesia..

I WONDER WHERE MY BROTHER IS!!!

Typhoon number 13 which looked like it was heading our way seems to be on it’s way to China. America marks seven years since the terrorists changed our world forever. AND!!!!!  I hear that Tina Fey might be headed back to Saturday Night Live and won’t she be a great Palin!!!!!!

Those of you who know me well know that I am always up for a good garage sale.  I have my mother to thank for passing on the thrill of the hunt and the great joy to be found in great finds…however, even better than a garage sale is picking stuff out of GARBAGE… and in this case…. bags of clothes to be recycled for rags…. every other month the kids in the neighborhood pick up stuff left on the curbs for recycling.  I go along to help, and to look through the bags….and look what I found last time…

Groovy Jeans!!!!

Groovy Jeans!!!!aren't these jeans unbelievable!!! of course they don't fit me but THE COLORS!!! and they are like TIE DYE!!! If and when I ever cut them up they will make an excellent bag... and other stuff too. I can't believe somebody would just throw these out!!!!

Here’s another great find.  Underneath is a blue linen skirt.  The dye is not quite even so I think it is “homemade”. On top is a big hunk of white linen.  I think those flowers are hand painted. It is really cool stuff….. why oh why do people throw such great stuff away???

finally, here is the coaster that Kayla is working on.  She is taking her time, she is busy with lots of times, but sometimes I catch her sitting down working on a row or two.  It makes me feel so good just to see her knitting!!!!!!

monday morning. material update

8 kg of material

8 kg of material

my sister had the brilliant idea to weigh her material, so I stacked it up and there it is!!!  8 kilograms, that would be 17.6 pounds of lovliness.  I ended up taking a lot of the smaller bits…. and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what caught my eye…….

i think the best part though was the big ziplock baggy I filled with strips.  A whole bunch of strips that somebody else cut out and that I get to sew together.  I have already sewn a few blocks and can’t wait to get making more. !!!!!!!!!!

in other news.  we took another family trip to the beach yesterday and while I was just sitting and everyone else was doing something else I saw two big stingrays (bigger than a garbage can lid!) leap from the water and dive back in.  It was so cool.  I have seen lots of little guys while snorkeling out there but never any that big.  I didn’t know that they jumped out of the water like that!!!

let’s talk about quilts.

well, I can’t play the jet lag card anymore.  Jet lag is done but I have been feeling kind of pokey lately. I can’t blame that on the heat because it has been cooler than it should be….the humidity has been tolerable and the breezes that blow have brought cool air.

We took a family day and went to the beach on sunday.  All three kids are officially snorkellers now. Kazu has been snorkelling for years and Kai for the first time did some sightseeing in the sea. There’s a nice sandy stretch with lots of stingrays to swim through to get out to a jetty and see some coral, bright blue fish, sea urchins and lots of fish.  It’s a great way to recharge my batteries….

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

I have mentioned before that I come from a long line of quilters.  I think my mom has a quilt back to her grandmother.  My sister has stitched, my mom stitches, I stitch, and my cousin that I met for the first time 2 years ago and reconnected with this time is a stitcher.  It’s an honor and a blessing to be surrounded by other textile lovers.  While spending the day with my cousin, I learned several things about her that didn’t surprise me at all because they reminded me so much of myself (and my mother). It seems to be in our DNA.  I am happy to report that while attending two knitting get togethers with me my daughter got started on knitting a coaster.  She’s doing great and I have high hopes for her future in stitching……

All 3 kids went back to school on Monday for a half day and all day today.  I am spending the day pulling stuff out of the closet in the living room and sorting out all my projects and moving forward with them and not starting anything new….Later I will share photos of the suitcase full of material and treasures that I brought back from my trip.
