the gods are smiling…it’s OKUNCHI….

long long ago in Nagasaki when interest in SHINTO was waning and local priests were worried about the CHRISTIAN invasion, a festival to bring out the GOD OF SUWA SHRINE was introduced… there was dancing in the streets , sake was consumed and beautiful gifts were presented in honor of the shrine.

the god came down from the shrine to mingle with the people.  crowds of revellers flocked to the city to indulge in festivity and local delights…….

from the mountains and from the sea, there was a fantasmagoria of fabulous food……

on the third day, the god mounted the stairs to the top of the shrine to rest for the year….. the people of Nagasaki heaved a sigh of relief, cleaned up the remains of the celebration and returned to their normal lives.
